C-484 redux
Via Alison, Dr. Dawg, and Antonia Z, C-484 may be rearing its ugly head. On the docket for ConCon '08 is this (pdf link):
RESOLUTION P-207
NEW
Protecting Pregnant Women
PROPOSED BY PRINCE ALBERT AND SASKATOON HUMBOLDT
The Conservative Party supports legislation to ensure that individuals who commit violence against
a pregnant woman would face additional charges if her unborn child was killed or injured during
the commission of a crime against the mother.
You may remember C-484, known to anti-abortion crusaders as the "kicking abortion's ass" bill, even though it was insisted on that the bill had nothing to do with abortion. Heh. Steve promised that the abortion debate would not be opened by his government. Heh again. C-484 did have a specific provision saying it's not about abortion, but it creates legal language that could be interpreted as giving a fetus separate rights from the mother. That's why the anti-abortion groups salivate over it so - they can't wait to start taking OB/GYNs to court for murder.
Funny thing. Nobody has ever been able to tell me exactly an "unborn victicms of crime" bill will protect a pregnant woman. Magical force field? Teams of ninja bodyguards dispatched at the first signs of pregnancy? And how will the punishment be worse on two counts when there is concurrent sentencing? *crickets....
We've got our eyes on it. And we'll be pestering the opposition, you can count on it.

We should know by now
Honestly, we do know already...
.. they lie. Like weasels. It's what they do. They can't help themselves. It's who they are. Weasels.
Everything's cheaper than it looks.
Go get 'em. (eom)
