Harper the Machiavelli wannabe......Reality meets brickwall.

Defunding the parties. Anyone not seeing the rationale behind it yet?
Except for the blogging tories and the knuckledragging slavering NOT WITH MY TAX dollars crowd?

Nuance and nimblefootedness are not a Harpercon strong point. Obviously. They keep trying, and they keep getting busted for the silliest things.
So what will the opposition parties do? They don't have the same support from corporate Canada as the Cons do, mostly because they don't do their bidding with such an unfailing removal from reality and facts and the public good and other icky stuff like that.

The Libs are not doing well with contributions from the rich folks it seems, nor the NDP, nor the Bloc, nor the greens. That should be a pretty glaring indicator right there. The Republicans in the States were always the ones who managed to garner the contributions from the rich too. How good have they been over the last 8 years for the common American? Without the word "corporation" behind their name they are pretty much just background noise to the GOP.

Obama did an amazing thing in the US, he managed a campaign of monumental size, all on private funds. Kudos for him.

Let's look at a couple of the biggest differences between the two countries when it comes to campaign funding:

US population: 305,756,396
Canada: 33,212,696'

Bit of a difference, wouldn't you say?

Now this is especially apparent because the US is running what is considered to be a two party system. (The Ron Paul and Nader fanatics don't make much of a dent) One either funds the Republicans, or the Democrats.

Canada, has the left/centre split, (as many of us have labouriously said so many times) so that the 66% who do not vote Con, are supporting 4 parties.

The Cons will not notice much of a difference in their coffers if they cut the per vote funding, they have all that money coming in from companies who wish to support whomever will do their bidding. Simple stuff.

Those of us who exist in the reality based world, can see this ploy for exactly what it is.
I think the Liberals have it, I think that most members of the NDP have it. Jack is a wildcard, he doesn't always do what many of us consider is in the best interests of Canada. The Greens and the Bloc? I think they see it too.

So, dudes? Get your shit together. You will have to play nice at some point if you want to get anything done, or reflect the true values of Canadians. Canada is not a right wing country.

Don't sell us all down the river because of party lines.
I have a feeling that there are many like me, who know what is going on, and will not respect or support any party, if they cannot put the knives away and do what is best.

(pale is not affiliated with any party. So THERE!.)

Heh

Well.... yeah.

The path to Conservative political dominance is to financially bankrupt your opponents.

So
wrote Tom Flanagan
, one of the deep thinkers of the conservative movement in Canada and a mentor to Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Flanagan's prescient op-ed piece from August appeared to come to fruition in Thursday's fiscal update when Harper's Conservatives moved to end public financing of federal political parties under the guise of austerity.

"There will be no free ride for political parties," Flaherty told the House of Commons in his speech on the update.

"Even during the best of economic times, parties should count primarily on the financial support of their own members and their own donors."

The move, while hitting the Tories hardest in absolute dollar terms, would gut the opposition parties.

I don't think there's really anything else anyone needs to know, is there? CPoC Über Alles

p.s. Why I have to keep saying this, I dunno, but I'm farther to the left than the NDP and no fan or supporter of the Liberal Party. To my fellow lefties who wish the destruction and obliteration of the Liberal Party? Be careful what you wish for, lest it come true. This fantasy that some magical new progressive coalition that a majority of Canadians will immediately elect will suddenly come to be and/or we will have a true left/right vote is just that: Fantasy. It will take years of work top accomplish. In the meantime who do you think will be solidifying their grip on the reins of power. More current Liberals not drift over to the NDP. They will drift to the party that more closely approaches the centre. Guess who that will be? C'mon, one little guess. Bah! Piss and moan away... and wish for your wish to come true. Just don't act all suprised when it bites you in the ass. You'll probably just piss and moan some more. Bah!

pps - and this is largely why I'm not even reading any blogs, or even commenting at the moment. Apologies to those of you who actually do walk the talk, I'll be back with you in the new year. Right now? I. Just. Can't.

Everything's cheaper than it looks.
