Why does the Stupak amendment make me uneasy?
What the Stupak amendment does, is insidious, it removes access and it challenges Women's rights, and the right to healthcare.
I am Canadian you say? That is just a US travesty, right?
For now.
But since there are still some ( A loud, unwashed, but squeaky minority) anti choicers we need to be watching here as well.
See if I make my case here.....ok?
*there are many regressive anti choice groups pushing for this, removing access by cutting funding.
*They will use whatever tactics they can through the legal system.
*Backdoors to removing access.
*Steve and co have been busily removing women's programs, and the court challenges program. In order to overturn bad and or illegal legislation, it must first get to court.
*Recall this backdoor? Keep in mind that the only reason it went away (for now) was the last election made it die on paper. Some Liberals voted the wrong way on the readings in Parliament, and some were too busy eating little pink hot Hamburgers to show up.
Additional slap in the face! It was during International Women's week. (This was all FAIL on a grand scale hey?)
*Remove access through a side door, known as a conscience clause. Also dead, for now.
*Go after Universal Healthcare period.
By challenging the healthcare act itself there will be ample opportunity to restrict access, or to deny abortion. Shona Holmes, who I truly think is the most despised woman in Canada, is the one selling out for the Canadian Constitution Foundation. John Weston, Conservative MP and rabid anti choice wingnut is the founder of that regressive organization.
*The PM, Steve, another rabid anti- choice anti women wingnut, is the former President of the National Citizens Coalition. Which of course was founded specifically to abolish Canada's healthcare system.
*The war of attrition. Cut services enough in all areas of Healthcare (Well underway) and women's rights will be the first sacrifice on the altar of budgetcuts. Women always take the first hit. Always.
And under that last one, even though the Cons insist that they are spending more healthcare dollars, those increases do not keep up with the population growth, nor new technologies which add so much to the price tag.
We do need to be vary wary of what is happening in the US right now. The Minority Conservatives and a few Liberals are not interested in what the people of Canada support, that is evident every day.
It's an interesting scene to watch
from the relative safety of Canada, but there's self-interest in it also.
It's always a good idea to keep an eye on what the theocrats do south of the border, because their Canadian counterparts often attempt similar routines up here. (ie. Bill C-484).
Having said that, it's kind of horrifying to watch as womens' uteruses are debated and discussed like they're just another piece of policy. Ugh -- backwards or what.

I think it's really important to watch this & to keep up our own defenses against back door legislations of this sort - eg. Brad Trost, Con MP, is posting anti-abortion petitions on ProLife Sites as we speak. THANKS!! You rock!!

Wingnutz Aren't Stupid
We like to think they're crazy but they're crazy like a fox. Stupak, Pitts and more than a few Democrats did what no one has been able to do through the front door for decades - they actually took away the right of a very sizeable block of women to reproductive healthcare. Shame shame on them but shame on us too if we fail to notice and get our collective ass in gear.

I saw more in depth coverage on the Wingnutz on the Rachel Maddow Show on MSNBC. The influence of the C Street Church came screaming through on this issue.
Strangely enough while insisting every woman keeps a portable coat hanger ready to assault thier seed - they have no guilt about passing that same seed around to many women they work with or hire for short periods. Wives are taken for granted. Probably the only monogamous entity in the Traditional Marriages of C Street Churchers.
No wonder they call themselves the Christian Mafia! Even though I have watched ProLife Politics for thirty years now I never realized all those line ups of women and children with dead baby posters at clinics were NOT publically funded clinics. So private clinics were the target all along!
So that must mean I can go to the Fertility Clinics with my sign : FROZEN BABIES CAN'T SCREAM!! They create life en masse and do not decide what happens to leftovers. Isn't storage just a ProLife Purgatory?
Both ProLife and the Catholic Church seem to endorse creating life for cash. Done in a lab dish means no evil sex act to create the frozen babies.
Being ProLife means they can create lives without citizenship in the hundreds of thousands but a woman who gets pregnant naturally can not end one life if it means saving her own. Talk about having your cake and eating it too!
