Publically raped in Calgary?

Oh gods.

A girl is in hospital and a boy is in custody after an alleged sexual assault Monday afternoon in northeast Calgary that was witnessed and possibly filmed by eight other young people.
Police said it happened just before 5 p.m. MT in the playing field of Clarence Sansom Junior High in the 5800 block of 24th Avenue N.E.

What else to say?

A couple weeks ago there were reports of people in Calgary driving past a dying man lying in the road after a motorvehicle accident.

Now this one.

One of those youths, who cannot be named, told CBC News that everyone involved had been drinking heavily. He said the alleged victim is 12 and the boy accused of assaulting her is 16.
"I didn't do nothing. I know I could have stopped it, and should have, but I didn't because I didn't want to get involved and all that,"
said the 16-year-old, adding he spent most of Monday night in jail being questioned by police.

Where would this come from? Desensitization from TV and video games? violent images in porn?

How about something as elemental as Parental influence?

So - we're not supposed to gawk, but we're supposed to call something in. The last time I called about a traffic accident, the 911 operator was quite rude - very annoyed that I was calling because, he said, "lots of other people had already called" and I didn't need to.

That was what "Jan" said in the comments in an article reporting the apathetic cruelty of Calgarians who simply ignored that dying man on the road. What has she taught her children if she has any?

Calgary is the heart of the Harpercon base.

One cannot help but notice there is very little heart or humanity in these stories.

That little girl, just 12 years old. I will be thinking of her for quite some time to come.

And I will be talking to my kids again about what their responsibilities as fellow earth travelers are.
They will never pass on by, or stand and watch when they can make a difference.

how we allow...

our children to terrorize eachother is exactly as you describe pale. Parents don't have time to do the job of raising their children to be good citizens. I see lots of parents (of children and teens) who don't feel the need (or the right) to correct bad behaviour. Instead they are looking for approval from the very kids they are supposed to be preparing for life.

These parents are the ones that load the Christmas Tree with obscene abandon, plan elaborate vacations in Disneyland, allow unrestricted access to the internet, cellphones, makeup, la senza for girls, lululemon, west 49th....

My point is, loving parents aren't raising them, corporations are, and they are after branding this "market" from birth. Works for the conservatives, they get their fear based, hate filled world, all dumbed down and ready for Facsism.

Just sayin'

It's simpler than all that

It starts from an everyday action like when walking past a man passed out on a park bench, and not giving it a second thought. If the kids are with us, they copy.
It is this dehumanization of others by little everyday actions that leads to willful ignorance of criminal actions taking place in front of us.
Let's start on the path back to humanity by saying 'hello' to all the people we pass.

Anyhow, Calgary, eh? Little North Texas. Rich from oil money. A hearless city? I hope not, as I have friends and relatives living there. Here's a song for those living there,
