broadcast consortium: No "BROADS!" Let's make some noise.

Canada's broadcast consortium, at an annual meeting....

Hell's bells.
The free press, who are supposed to be there simply to present ideas and facts, are still trying to decide who shall be heard....

This debate shutout has reared it's ugly head again.
Again. Sheesh.

  1. The Greens are an official party.
  2. They have a leader.
  3. They are running in this election.

Case closed.

The broadcast consortium is made up of representatives from CBC, Radio-Canada, CTV, Global and TVA.
Spokesman Marco Dubé confirmed the group decided unanimously that a formal proposal will only be made to the leaders of recognized parties in the House of Commons — Conservative, Liberal, NDP and Bloc Québécois.
"The representation of parties in the House was one important factor, but we're not going to give more information on the other criteria," Dubé said.
"This is a programming decision. The Broadcasting Act is clear: the decision on the leader's debates is a broadcast consortium decision."

Actually, no. It is not a programming descision. This is about the broadcasters responsibility to Canadians under the charter.  And what the hell is "other criteria"?
Someone got in touch with Troy Reeb, the chair of the broadcast consortium....

I explained the reasoning behind allowing Elizabeth into the debates, including my charter argument and the fact that one million Canadians deserve a voice in the debates. No rebuttal, only explaining they had the right to make the decision and it was **their** airways. I pointed out that spectrum is owned by the citizens. I asked him if he would consider a second opinion from an ethics professor. He essentially dismissed the idea outright, saying that the large networks are already well versed in journalistic standards. The fight is on! Get involved! Organize or take part in the protests! Take it to the streets!

THEIR AIRWAYS? Holy mother murphy Mr Reeb may need a reality check.  Fire up the Thunderbird kids? From this link:

1. Visit http://demanddemocraticdebates.ca to sign our petition, donate, and more!

2. Vote in CBC’s poll on whether Elizabeth should be invited to the leaders’ debates

3. Email the consortium members CBC, CTV, Global, TVA and Radio Canada.

4. Email the party leaders: Stephen Harper, Jack Layton, Michael Ignatieff and Gilles Duceppe. Tell them to press the networks to include Elizabeth May.

5. Visit the Facebook pages of the party leaders, and write on their
walls that you want them to demand Elizabeth May be in the debates.

6. Tweet your outrage! Use the hashtag #EMayIn.

7. Post about this on Facebook.

It looks again like the good ol'boyoz are standing firm in saying that there are no girlz allowed. And that is not their job, and NOT their place. And these are OUR airwaves.

Nearly 87%

...voted yes for May's inclusion on that CBC poll.

That's heartening. It demonstrates that by and large, Canadians have an inherent understanding of what is democratic. Too bad they can't take it to the next level and demand proportional representation.
