Another Harper broken promise with flip-flop over child-care spots

Fighting for women’s rights in Afghanistan while undermining them at home

A much-touted promise by the federal Conservatives to create 125,000 new child-care spaces may not be doable, suggests Social Development Minister Monte Solberg.
"We have to be realistic," Solberg said..He then firmly passed the buck to his provincial cousins.
"You know, the people who are the primary deliverers of child-care spaces are the provinces.
When Steve made the promise to provide child-care spaces as he was gunning for the job of running the federal governement, did he not know that? Of course he did, which is why Solberg’s statement is nothing more than a graceless excuse that holds no weight. The Liberals had an agreement in place with the provinces to provide day care spots, and the neandercons killed it, making promises they knew were empty.
Why the weak lies, the broken promise, the flip-flop? It is because the governemtn is strapped for money after declaring a surplus? No, the truth is Canada’s Neandercon Government doesn’t give a damn about women. This, however, doesn’t just affect women, it affects children, low and middle income families who seriously need decent day care. Sure, Stevie is giving a paltry 100.00 a month per child under 6 - before taxes-
But NDP child-care critic Olivia Chow says other families are caught in a crossfire of political finger pointing between municipalities, provinces and Ottawa. She said she hears from parents every day who are desperate for care they can afford: "They can't work. There are horror stories.” Also missing is any federal legislation to ensure provinces spend child-care money on high-quality, accessible programs, Chow said.
So let’s see the neandercon plan to improve our way of life and restore family values -
Criminalize abortion, remove the word “equality” from SWC’s mandate, remove access to advocay, fund fundamentalist religious groups acting under the guise of women’s or family groups, then take away day-care. After all, mommy and daddy are the best day care, which translates to mommy as day care since someone has to work, and traditional families demand it be the man. That leaves women and girls forced to follow through on unplanned pregnacies, while removing support and advocacy. When Harper says “Canada is coming back,” it seems he is saying “Canada is going back.” What’s next? Decriminalize domestic abuse and re-name it a family matter, then advise battered women to go see their minister or priest, pray, or better yet, become a REAL woman and just try harder at being the perfect wife and mother. Try not to upset the man because you know, he works so hard and pays the bills.

If REAL women and those of that ilk have hubbies who can afford to support them and all children from their planned and unplanned pregnancies, if they want to give up their rights to advocacy, if they want to obliterate their names and call themselves Mrs. John Smith, if they want to stand “behind” their man, hey - go for it. But that is not the reality for most women, or most families. Single income families cannot all afford day-care. Single mothers, (those wanton gals who have children out of wedlock or those UNREAL women who chose to leave an abusinve husband rather than obey him ‘till homocide makes them part), do not have the luxury of their husband’s money to stay at home and be mommy day-care.
So what will happen to those precious family values? Hey, we don’t have to guess, we already know because we’ve been there, remember? Financial problems increase domestic abuse (child abuse also, for those think-of-the-children people). Single parents cannot get out of the cycle of poverty and education levels drop as working to survive becomes more important than going to school. Poverty, child poverty.
And for those who say this neandercon government wants to help families, here is yet another victim to that fanactic right wing, fundamentalist ideology, a victim that existed in part to prevent victimization:
Martha Friendly, executive director of the Childcare Resource and Research Unit, has lost her $250,000 budget since the Conservatives came to power. "My resource library's in boxes," she said from Toronto. "I think things are very hard for young parents... Everywhere you look there are accessibility crises, quality crises. From talking to people across the country, I think things are in a really bad way. "Yet, all the evidence about well-designed early childhood education being a good thing for children is so overwhelming."
And Stevie, you really need to work on that international leader thing -
Friendly noted that Canada ranks well below European countries of less wealth that are doing much more for young families. "This is such an obvious social policy for a country to have. You look at it from an international point of view, and Canada is so far behind."

Steve aspires

To make Canada like the US. Hoo boy.
Childcare and healthcare are so "socialist". They even the playing field and therefore spread the wealth around leaving things like the middle class intact and also reduce poverty.
The Harper Conservatives want to protect the top 1%.
Chaining women is such a small price to pay eh?

I am in the trenches here with two very small children. No one has ever asked me what my barriers are....lol. They simply do not care.
Righteous rant 900ft Jesus! How can we apply more heat to actually make this into a debate? To force the Corporate media to actually ask whats REALLY going on?

Powers that be, powers of three, keep me strong during this insanity......

You can't see this,

but I am pumping my fist here in my cubicle in that "power to the people!" kind of way. Fantastic journal, 900ft Jesus. Thank you so much for posting it here.

Modern Conservatism is a menace to free society. The election can't come soon enough as far as I'm concerned. We need to speak out forcefully against this kind of regressionist policy making and overall attitude.

Excellent

You are seeing right through Steverino's spin. 'Course with eyes like ... man, are you ever tall ! Runs in the family I suppose, eh.

Harper designed a child care program to reward the people that vote for him. Single income families have less chance of having the child care money taxed back from them. He is not about solving a problem or addressing an issue. He has a solution to everything and he is going to give it to you whether you like it or not.

Oh and the surplus was $ 13 billion, way more than the $ 9 billion forecast.
How's this for a flip-flop

When in opposition, the Conservatives sharply criticized the Liberals for reporting hefty budget surpluses that were much higher than their forecasts.
Harper said his government wasn't guilty of the same thing.
"We were very critical of budget estimates that we thought were flagrantly untrue, deliberately underestimated," he said.
"That's not been the case with this government. We have worked carefully to produce the best estimates possible."

He is playing us all for suckers.
