Pawns & Tools
Steverino was in Uganda recently. He was 'gettin' it done', as has been detailed on this site. Nice work y'all.
He did one other thing while he was there. He proposed and got passed a resolution to suspend Pakistan from the Commonwealth.
"The Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG), a committee of nine foreign ministers empowered by the Commonwealth to make such decisions, agreed to turf Pakistan during a meeting in Uganda."
I came across an interesting diary on dKos postulating a reason for Steverino's actions. This is the gist of it near as I can determine.
Musharraf, Pakistan's dictator, is supported by the USA. It was conveyed to him that he was either with us or against us, after 9/11. The States wants him to suppress and/or wipe out the Taliban in Northern Pakistan. Musharraf thinks the US needs him more than he needs the US. Not much suppression of the Taliban is going on. The US is getting impatient and is looking to rattle Musharraf's chain. Musharraf is the pawn in the chess game that the US is playing.
Steverino is the tool that moves the pawn.
Steve is doing GWB bidding by suspending Pakistan from the Commonwealth.
I don't know. Steve may be acting as a responsible government should to sanction Pakistan because they suppressed free speech, rounded up dissidents and stacked the judiciary. The timing is curious. Other events ( the return of Bhutto from exile - self-imposed I understand ) might mean there are other machinations behind the scene.
I would assume that the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group doesn't meet that often and this is the first chance to pass a resolution. I further assume that Britain would have a huge influence on what the "Commonwealth" does, whether or not the currently have a seat on the Action Group.
Curious.
