You have to pay for your own expertise...Real or fake.

Wo ho!

This is like the twighlight zone. Come along on my tour of odd coincidences...(Which of course I don't believe in.....)

Seems one of Canada's Premier go-to guys on the fake scientemific phenomena known as "excited delirium" has a few troubles popping up.

The big scary STUN GUN company has paid for him to appear at many of their functions, and give the company line....

James Cairns, one of the country's most high-profile coroners, who publicly advocates the use of the stun gun, has become one of the top Canadian experts Taser officials turn to for help shoring up public support for their products in times of crisis. Since the death of Robert Dziekanski, a Polish immigrant, at Vancouver International Airport last month, Taser has repeatedly urged journalists to contact Dr. Cairns for his pro-taser views.

He has traveled to Las Vegas, and Chicago to give the XXXXX intl studies, presented as real science.

He has also spoken at a Las Vegas conference for the Institute for the Prevention of In-Custody Deaths, a small private company with ties to Taser. It is headed by John Peters, a communications specialist who often acts as a course instructor for Taser International. Its only other director is Michael Brave, a Taser legal executive.

But it seems that Dr Cairns has some other troubles a' brewin, he was also playing cover up for the other Coroner whose cases are all coming back with erroneous autopsy results.

Dr. Cairns was slated to deliver a talk yesterday, titled "Excited Delirium Deaths: Public Inquiry Process; ED Training for Ontario Provincial Police Officer and its Impact on the Coroner's Office" at the institute's 2007 conference. He dropped out because he was testifying at an inquiry in Ontario, where he admitted to shielding disgraced pathologist Charles Smith.

Taser firms picked up coroner's tab to give lectures

Eerily like Big oil, and the tobacco companies isn't it? They have been trying to squelch data and fact with their own "studies" and experts for many years. Why not the BIG SCARY STUN GUN company? It seems in this world its how much you can spend, not how accurate the data is.

Bonus stun gun "expert" weird stuff:

Dr Deborah Mash, is another expert that XXXXX intl sends the press to talk to.

Teh Google- Dr Mash turns up in a LOT of articles.

Dr. Deborah Mash is an American professor of neurology and of molecular
and cellular pharmacology at the University of Miami School of Medicine and director of the university's Brain Endowment Bank. She is one of the world's foremost scientific experts on the hallucinogenic drug, ibogaine.

Dr. Mash has been on the scientific advisory board for the Life
Extension Foundation
, located in Florida.

The Life Extension Foundation, sell vitamins and diet supplements.

That Life Extension foundation was founded by this guy: Saul Kent.

Saul Kent, also founded the ALCOR Life Extension Foundation, there are notes that the two foundations are NOT CONNECTED. Despite the name. And the founder. These are the people that freeze heads and bodies. In case they can bring them back to life one day. Uh huh.

The Baseball legend Ted Williams is somewhere in Arizona right now.........

What would Ted Williams have thought if he knew his body would be hanging
upside down in a nitrogen-filled tank with perhaps four other full bodies and
five heads at a cryogenics lab inside a strip mall in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Seen Disney on Ice?

Scottsdale is the same town that STUN GUN INTL is headquartered in, just for another bit'o'the weird.

STUN GUN expert weirdness?.......You decide.

I vote that we need independent studies and experts, who maybe, just maybe.... might have OUR best interests at heart.

Most Excellent Ms. Pale

I knew, just knew, you'd be on this story.

CBC radio news featured an interview this morning with one of those "experts" at the Las Vegas conference. The google doesn't have a transcript yet but as I was driving to work I distinctly heard someone say: "...TASER (TM)... is as safe as Tylenol (TM)..."

I'll update when I find the link to the darn quote.

Here's an account from 2006

and second hand but it illustrates the point above.

As the bodies began piling up, however, critics began asking whether TI had overstated its claims of safety. Company officials scoffed. One spokesperson maintained that tasers were no more dangerous than Tylenol, while TI's president denied the existence of any evidence that tasers could be dangerous.

*Emphasis added

I wonder if the good folks over at McNeil Consumer Brands, Inc., owners of the Tylenol (TM)trademark know their brand name is being used in this way? How do you spell cease and desist?

PS edited to provide a better link & more accurate quote

Here's your updated link

from the CBC's report on a TASER conference in Las Vegas:
Tasers safer than Tylenol, engineer tells conference

A biomedical engineer with ties to the company that makes Tasers insists that the stun-guns are safer than Tylenol.

"You have Tylenol in your home? As far as an electronic controlled device killing you, this stuff is safer than Tylenol," Dr. Mark Kroll said Thursday in Las Vegas.

Do you think the good folks who own the rights to ASTROTURF (TM) would mind the use of the word here?

Dr. Kroll is disingenuous when choosing his comparison. It is widely known that it is possible to overdose with acetaminophen. A quick google search shows that many people attempt suicide in this manner. How about an apples to apples comparison?

Thanks. Its like anything

One can commit murder or suicide with just about anything.

the question? Does it have another purpose? How many kids are here today from their fevers being kept down, due to acetaminophen?

The SCARY STUN GUN company, is using data that they have doctored and written themselves.
The bright spot is that we KNOW what these companies and the Bush admin are capable of. Complete lies, incomplete facts, and loads of complete Bullshit.
Lets hope that someone is actually paying attention and not swallowing this corporate hackery hook line and sinker.

Powers that be, powers of three, keep me strong during this insanity......

Ibogaine

mixed with diet supplements causes excited delirium. ;-0

Everything's cheaper than it looks.

Best data money can buy!

Ah...."Mercenary scientists"...they have the credentials (maybe) but are not interested in anything but making money. They take the easy road...And will shill for anyone with a big enough bank book. Case in point..."Dr." Tim Ball... once the scientific white knight of Big Tobacco...who is NOW filing the same role for the Climate Change denial industry...
