The Ultimate Big Dreamer

I woke up from a dream this morning that made me feel terrific, I had a bounce in my step and hope for the world. Such is the power of dreams, except for one teensy little thing. It isn’t usually like me but I dreamed that I had somehow eradicated the world of the notion of god. I had presented some kind of irrefutable case that made everyone realize that the world would be better off if we only deal with what we know how to prove and forget self justifying notions of mythological religions.

All of the heads of all the major religions came on board and endorsed the idea that religious self-justification was a redundant notion when all people have to share the same world regardless of notions of faith.

It sounds like such a simple thing, but we are not simple people. There was a vision associated with the thought; it was like a hurricane or tornado of ideology that represented human growth. I suppose it was a bit like a spiritual metaphor for nature’s cleansing of the mind. I had no idea I could dream so big.

Obviously it was just a dream, but the sense of I got from it was palpable, I woke up with the dreams of people who had the same dream centuries before me and after my first coffee I realized it was only one of the great hopes of many people before me.

The most unrealistic dream of all: the dream that all of humanity reaches the same place at the same time and we can all live in peace.

Such is the futility of hope for an atheist, we have dreams of the world that are just as unrealistic and hopeless as people of faith, we have the same dreams for humanity and the same unrealistic hope we can all reach the same understanding at the same time.

It can’t be done, any hope we have belies the importance of the human spirit, the importance of being, if we don’t learn on our own, we can’t learn at all.

It was a nice idea, it sure made me feel good in the morning but the day reminded me that hopes of a man like me changing the world overnight are nothing more than fantastic dreams.

But I have to admit; I’m glad I still have them.

Ahhh - Moon River!

Thanks for posting, Bruce. Keep dreaming, I will too. :-)

I'm thinking...

...you are right in saying you are not the first to have that dream. It does go back centuries, I suppose. I'm sure it goes back 1971.

Imagine there's no heaven

It's easy if you try

No hell below us

Above us only sky

Imagine all the people

Living for today...

Imagine there's no countries

It isn't hard to do

Nothing to kill or die for

And no religion too

Imagine all the people

Living life in peace...

You may say I'm a dreamer

But I'm not the only one

I hope someday you'll join us

And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions

I wonder if you can

No need for greed or hunger

A brotherhood of man

Imagine all the people

Sharing all the world...

You may say I'm a dreamer

But I'm not the only one

I hope someday you'll join us

And the world will live as one

Dreams are powerful things. I'm glad you had one big enough to inspire you.

imagine...

that was my first thought, willy.

Very nice post, bruce. Vonnegut said it is unfortunate that so many people need the crutch of religion. Your words show a similar belief. The evils committd in the names of various gods.
