WISE shutting down
You folks on ACR are the first to receive this notice, in honour of your recent fundraising effort on behalf of WISE.
WISE is shutting down permanently. Its virtual existence - the WISE website and associated email accounts, which were the residual of WISE that we'd been holding onto - will cease effective April 1st.
In our media release of December 11th, we'd indicated that we might still survive, if x, y, and z came into play. They didn't.
A few days ago, I received the renewal notice for our website hosting. We haven't the money to pay the bill. Even if by some unlikely circumstance the remainder of what we need arrived in our bank account in time, we realized in talking today that we no longer have the heart to carry on. It would be too little, too late.
My associate, Daphne Moldowin, and I are exhausted. WISE work has been so incredibly draining that words fail to describe its depth. The need among women in poverty is so great and our own poverty hasn't helped.
As WISE's Founder, am I sad?
Yes, I suppose I am; but I'm also relieved.
Perhaps it's time for Daphne and I to start caring for ourselves, just a bit. After all, we've been carrying more than our own weight for several years.
As for me, I'm tempted to branch out into fields that being Coordinator of WISE prevented me from doing. For example, I’d like to become politically active and have discovered a particular talent for doing presentations - and, of all things, speech writing!

Sorry
Sorry you came so far and couldn't go on. Sorry it took such a toll on you personally. Sorry the Cons were elected and messed with Status of Women funding. Sorry that you and the organization can no longer help the people in need. Sorry that there are people in need.
It's a small consolation but you have to know that you done good. The world is a better place because of you and what you did for others. You are a better person because of what you accomplished.
Best wishes to you, Naci.Sey
Sometimes change is forced on us, and it can take us in unexpected and positive directions. Thanks for giving so much of yourself to others.
I hope you'll keep us posted (and keep posting) here. Politically active is our middle name.
Very sorry ...
Very sorry to read this. There is going to be so much rebuilding to do after the carnage wreaked by Harper. Take care, and well done ... for now. It's always only for now, even the setbacks.
Books still available
Forgot to mention that we've still books available, so if anyone was thinking of ordering one, please do so before the website shuts down.
So sorry to read this ...
... as the others have noted above much more eloquently.
Don't know what this means for WISE
but it sure gives Daphne and I some hope.
Just received a letter from the BC Ministry of Education, saying that the WISE Book has been added to their Recommended list for the new Grade 12 Social Justice course.
Not sure if that translates into actual orders. My understanding is that teachers still have complete say over the materials they use (as it should be), but said materials must be approved by the Ministry.
Let's hope
It means something positive.
As I commented at your blog, congrats to both of you!
Everything's cheaper than it looks.
